Latvian school has been a fixture in the Indianapolis Latvian Community since Latvians first began arriving here. Many families have participated over the years, and the individuals who have attended Latvian School have typically forged close ties with others in their age group. Currently, about 20 children aged 3 to 12 are enrolled in the Latvian school program. The curriculum varies based on the age and abilities of the children. Younger children participate in song, folkdance, and arts & crafts sessions. Older children attend classes in grammar, religious studies, literature, history, geography, conversation, reading, and writing, in addition to song and folkdance. In addition to the curriculum provided for the Latvian children who are already fluent in the Latvian language, interest in an adult education program and in a child non-speaker program resulted in the development of both an adult conversation and a basic Latvian language class. These classes, which began in January, 1999, have had several adult students who are connected to the Latvian community, but don't speak Latvian. The basic Latvian language class has helped non-speaking children gain the necessary language skills to move into regular classes. Other activities sponsored by the Latvian school include a Christmas play, an outdoor children's festival, a spring program, and a special program known as Draudzīgais Aicinājums.
