Indianapolis / Indianapole

According to 1997 population figures, Indianapolis is the 12th largest city in the United States with approximately 814,000 inhabitants contained in 403 square miles.  When the surrounding metropolitan areas are included (bringing the area covered to 3,089 square miles), Indianapolis ranks 31st in the nation with approximately 1.5 million people.  The ethnic composition of the city from those same 1997 figures is 77% white/caucasian, 21% african-american, 1.5% hispanic, and .5% other.

The city is economically strong with an estimated 2.7% unemployment rate (Chamber of Commerce data, 1999), and is home to numerous national and international corporations.  Because of its convenient location in the midwest, Indianapolis is frequently referred to as the "crossroads of America".  As evidence of this, more than one half of the nation's population lives within a day's drive of Indianapolis.

Despite its size and favorable geographical location, Indianapolis was not the first choice as a state capital.  That honor went to Corydon, Indiana, which is located in Harrison County at the southern edge of the state.  The state capital was moved to Indianapolis in 1825 (9 years after Indiana became the 19th state).
