Although the majority of the Indianapolis Latvian Community, much like Latvia itself, are Lutheran, a significant number of Latvians are Catholics. The Catholic Congregation sponsors events at the Latvian Community Center, and its members are also very active in the Latvian Community as a whole. While the congregation is not large enough for its own parish, Father John Beitans, whose family fled Latvia at the end of World War II, ministers to the Indianapolis Latvian Catholic community in addition to his regular assignment at St. Lawrence Parish in Indianapolis. Pope John Paul II has elevated two Latvians, Archibishop Julijans Vaivods of Riga and Archibishop Janis Pujats of Riga, to Cardinal (in 1983 and 2001 respectively).
